What did women do before the age of pad and tampons?

I remember asking my mom this question when I be a kid. I don't think she have an answer so she told me to ask a teacher. Well apparently I never did or I wouldn't be asking now.

My grandmother was born within 1904 so I was deeply curious to what they used and she said rags. They used diaper pins to pin them into their underpants and she said they have to change frequently. They also lived within the hills of WV and times be hard so even though near were belts around (site below say 1891), they weren't commonly used by most women.

They used cloth. Much the way populace used cloth diapers for babies, women used cloth menstual pads. You can actualy still make a purchase of cloth pads. Not as undemanding as disposables, but less expensive (you clean and reuse them), and probably better for you.

Is it ok to stop taking birth control pills mid-pack?

Before they had the current pad and tampons there be sanitary napkins that had to be attached to a belt you wore around your waist. Pretty discomfited, I'm sure. Prior to that, women used cloths that could be washed. I've hear of women wrapping moss with cloths, too or using sponges. All of that make me pretty happy to be surrounded by the era we are now!

I asked that to my grandma when i be a kid and she showed me some old clothing catalogs and what they used where on earth cloth pads (the same stuff of cloth diapers) and where held next to pins and special underwear.
