In the olden days girls used to wear rags. Thus the phrase "on the rag". Belts were introduced within the late 19th century, which enabled women to hold their rags contained by place with hooks or tabs.

When I be a child and began menstruating at age 10, we had such belts to hold the pad in place. The pads consequently had long paper ribbons coming out of respectively end and one tied these to the belt.

That is the closest to diapers that I have used.

Was I glad when they come out with self adhering pad and wings.
