That's great that you're going! It's normal to be a bit faint-hearted, but don't worry - the actual procedure for a pap smear in actuality takes practically smaller amount than 5 minutes. Seriously. When you call, newly say you're calling for an annual check up. They'll probably ask you if you're an existing merciful or a new forgiving, and they'll tell you to bring your insurance card. That's it!

The exam will progress something like this - you'll wear a gown that open in the front. The nurse will weigh you and embezzle your blood pressure. The doc will come in and examine your breasts for any unusual lumps and/or bumps (this takes a minute or two). Then the doc will examine your vagina - you'll scoot to the edging of the table and put your feet surrounded by stirrups that stick out from the table. The doc will insert fingers into you and place a hand on your lower belly and apply pressure - they're checking your internal organs to make sure everything "feels" right. This doesn't hurt - it's of late a little pressure. They'll after do a pap smear by inserting a metal or plastic device into your vagina that holds it open (this doesn't hurt - again, it's freshly a bit of pressure). They'll then insert a long q-tip similar to tool that will scrape sour a few cells from the cervix that will consequently be sent off to a lab to check for any abnormalities (this will grain a bit awkward, and you might feel for a while pinching, but it doesn't "hurt"). It sounds scary and complicated, but it seriously take only a few minutes.

I'd consent to the doctor know this is your first time, and that you'd appreciate them letting you know what they're doing and giving any explanation before they do it. That instrument you're not surprised.

Good luck!
