Period problems?

I am 17 years old and ive been have my period since 8th grade..its other been normal 3 weeks but for olden times few months its been every 2 weeks or not even..it hurts, i still have regular cramping ..and my doctor said it could be stress but if it keeps happening i be supposed to go back..but i be wondering if anyone knows what that cause of this is or if anyone have a situation like this before cuz im realllyyy freaking out.
