You can receive them cut shorter, but the will soften and wind around your cervix contained by a few weeks time. I had the same problem, but I opt not to get them trimmed. I have hear of some women having problems with their strings (when cut too short) getting "lost" by slipping into the cervix.

I found that manually pushing the strings up around my cervix prevented my husband from notice them... and they eventually stayed there.
