Hi Alexandra, the mucus plug is an debris of cervical secretion, which form adjectives throughout pregnancy to block the cervix and deter the hallway of germs into the uterus.

Usually in pregnancy, the mucus is cloudy clear, glutinous and sticky. Toward the expiration of pregnancy, when the cervix thins, some blood is released into the cervix which get mired surrounded by the mucus and become bloody. The capillary surrounded by the lower uterine segment break down a bit and can bleed.

In untimely labor, the plug is usually released as a continuous stringy discharge but sometimes it can truly resemble a plug.

Yes Alexandra, any vaginal discharge in pregnancy should be evaluated. But do not trade name a fuss, you would ask your doctor for an exam to rule out any problems.
