Irregular periods and progesterone creams? (Unicorn root)?

Wondering if anyone out near have taken progesterone cream to backing beside irregular period and big bleeding? I am not menopausal and not trying to conceive...only just trying to achieve regular. I am anemic and it is starting to affect my level of enthusiasm. The Drs want to put me on birth control pills but I get the impression approaching this is a group aid approach to the problem. Has anyone have any nouns beside unicorn root for irregular period? Thanks!!
