This is your first spell? Then, I'm sorry, your mom is wrong. Most people I know own their first periods for at tiniest a week or more. I had mine for 13 days, but it be mainly a feathery flow, so it wasn't a big deal.
My single tip is just hang on to an eye on your flow, keep a wipe on all the time, and when it go away, keep a wad on for another day only just in casing it returns or you spot. (In the first couple years of your period, things are thoroughly irregular). Soon you'll start to learn the signals from your body that a time of year is coming.

it can end anywhere from a a day or two up to 7 days...everyone is different..you can use tampons if youre more comfortable beside them...i always feel like i be wearing a diaper when i had pad so tampons were my piece...also it might be irregular at 1st but then it should be duplicate each month
