How does sex affect menstrual cramps?

I know that orgasmic sex relieves menstrual cramps.
My period started today, shortly after I have sex. Usually it starts with closely of cramps, but this time I didn't have any cramps, so I assumed it be because of sex. But 8 or 9 hours later, I get cramps. So does sex affect cramps right afterwards, and then the effect wear off? Or does this denote that it didn't really affect anything for me?
