Having just this minute had my coil changed I have an idea that I can answer this one!

Basically, they insert a speculum so they can have a better judgment of the cervix, get some forceps and tug the strings that dangle from your coil to verbs it out. It's a little mortified and you might experience some slight bleeding and period similar to cramps afterwards but it's no more painful than have one put in.

Usually, by pulling gently the attached thread surrounded by the vagina can remove the IUD safely. But if the thread is missed, afterwards it would need to be handle by a gynaecologist.
