They used rag, and like the others said they probably disappeared for 3-5 days. It's complicated to believe this is still going on in some countries, but it is. I hear there are some countries within Africa that allow young women to miss conservatory while they're on their period... reflect about it.. 3-5 days... once a month... out of arts school... horrable! I can't imagine how far bringing up the rear these girls are. As a matter of reality, I'm about to look up some orginizations where on earth I can help those poor girls right presently! They used belts to hold rags contained by place. Most used rags, thats where on earth the saying comes from "I'm on my rag". Seriously. lol
