As far as surgery go, it also depends on the giving. If the surgeons are removing a serious cancer, they will usually take no notice of the low WBC, administer the neupogen 24-48 hrs pre-op, and later operate. This is because removing the cancer in that baggage will in fact resolve the WBC problem (among other things). However, if the surgery is contraindicated by low WBC's, the docs may put you on a regimen to boost your WBC's into an above-board compass, something close to >5,000. Anything smaller amount than 2,000 rules out surgery, and >500 is life-threatening. Oh and if you do hold suregry beside low WBC's, you are at an increased risk for infection.
