Is breakthrough bleeding a sign that the pill isn't working correctly?

(haven't missed any pills) I have be on it for a couple years and this month for the first time ever I have spotting for 2 days, one week since my extent is due. Would my spell be lighter when it comes b/c of the mid-cycle bleeding or should it still be as beefy? Does this be going to that something isn't working right near the pill or is it common for this to occur out of nowhere? Would it still be ordinary if I own breakthrough bleeding subsequent month also? Lots of question sorry newly answer any you know. Thanks
