Insufficient hormone production leads to hypothyroidism.Although the effects can be unpleasant or humiliated, most thyroid problems can be managed ably if properly diagnosed and treated.Hypothyroidism stems from an underproduction of thyroid hormones. Untreated for long period of time, hypothyroidism can bring on a myxedema coma, a rare but potentially cruel condition that requires immediate hormone injections.A doctor can diagnose hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism by conducting tests the levels of thyroid hormones contained by your blood. Doctors measure hormones secreted by the thyroid itself, as resourcefully as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), a chemical released by the pituitary gland that triggers hormone production in the thyroid. When you are hypothyroid, higher quantity of TSH are circulating in your blood as your body attempts to foster increased production of thyroid hormones. The reverse is true with hyperthyroidism, within which TSH levels are below ordinary and circulating thyroid-hormone levels are soaring.
