If u get pregnant when doing it on ur periods, what is the scientific reason for conception?

I understand that ovulation occur bw days 14-17 in the average menstrual cycle of 28 days, and the egg-cell is discharged from the body during the menstrual bleed. I also understand that sperm can live within the body for up to 3 or 5 days.

For women who say they hold got pregnant whilst on thier period, is the reason that the sperm lived inside the woman long adequate until her ovaries relased a new egg?
