P.S. What Ss_sars said is fairly true but I think she's mixed up a bit. It is the lining of your uterus, where on earth you would carry a baby if you go and get pregnant, that gets thicker each month within preparation for a baby. And, if there is no babe-in-arms, then that lining sheds the excess that it have built up during the month and cleans house, so to speak. That way, each month here is the same process and it is fresh and new respectively month, making it the best it can be in case a babe is to make that it's home for 9 months. It is NEVER your stomach that gets thicker or sheds into the length..
When your body ovulates, it's also preparing for a baby. So the lining inside your vagina/stomach nouns gets thicker and thicker, preparing for the possibility of pregnancy.
