I've always used pads but I find it for a while disgusting and smelly. My period varies by a couple of days every month, and I know it hurts to remove a tampon when it's dry. So, how do you know when to put it contained by? If you've already started, isn't it gross to insert?

It doesn't really hurt , and it should really never be that dry when your on your period , you never put it in beforehand your period starts , and your going to want to change it every few hours while you are on your time . And it's no grosser to insery a tampon when your on your period than to remove a nasty wad .

Just pop it in and go really.And you wont even be capable of tell that its there after awhile. You can put a tampon surrounded by at anytime during your flow. Its your personal preference really. Just make sure to move it in long enough to hold your menstrual fluids.

Feel stupid for asking this, but.?

I'd recommend that you use a tampon when you are at your heaviest while ony oyur period. Otherwise, alternate with a wad or pantyliner. Also, use the least absorbency needed as to not become more apt to contract TSS.
