Problem With Iron Supplements?


I was recently diagnosed beside anemia and was told to take an iron supplement every light of day. It's only been a few days but I already consistency better. One problem though: it's causing constipation. I don't want to use a laxative or stool softener. I've never used either up to that time and I'm kind of scared to. I also don't want to stop using the iron, I be so tired I didn't get out of bed to do anything but use the bathroom. I was too tired to even brush my teeth or go swimming. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks.

I'm putting it here because I understand anemia is more of a problem with women.


Answers:    Iron not as much as anemia is the most common nutrient deficiency contained by the world and most common among women.

The constipation from the iron pills is very conventional. Constipation is the result of a lack of fiber and water within the diet. Iron pills tend to divert water supplies to the urine to excrete the non abosorbable amounts instead of this water going to the formation of feces where on earth it belongs. Solution? More fiber! Viscous fiber, like that found in celery and broccoli make up the bulk of feces and attracts water. Proper stools are larger and fluffy and are easily passed. Without the fiber stools are small and harder for the substantial intestine to work through. So add a few cups of broccoli to your next teatime and avoid dairy products. Diary not only makes you more constipated... it make it harder to absorb iron! Have some vitamin C with your iron, it improve absorption. .
There is a formulation of iron called ferrous gluconate (ferrous sulfate is the more adjectives iron supplement prescribed) and its gentler on the stomach. You can try increasing your fiber intake to help with the constipation. Also, docusate is a stool softner which you can be prescribed which is not a laxative or stimulant and it can back too.
