The safekeeping equipment requirement is for your sons protection. The skill level of the team or severity of dull pain is not the factor. A line drive to the groin could cause serious medical problems such as a torsion testicle. If the cost of the cup is a factor, gossip to the coach of the team as he/she may have a solution. Listen, I don`t know there wasn't that rule where you be before but now at the bright place there are rules and boundries. If he doesn't wear the required equipment he may get kicked sour the team. It seems approaching he is fine with it and it's just you who care. Calm down and follow the rules. It's the easiest way.
Two words... Line. Drive.
It doesn't matter if he's a pitcher, third baseman or center fielder -- protection is indispensable in any sport at any age. That's like suggesting little kids who play nouns ball don't need to wear helmets because they're not certainly throwing or pitching the ball nor are they any good..
