What cause hypothyroidism?

I have read a great deal about what happen in your body biologically when you already own an underactive thyroid.

But I'm wondering if anyone has any theories more or less what causes it initially. Obviously within is some kind of heritable factor...

I have a fancy that my years of crash dieting and taking diet pills may have stuffed up my thyroid, but I own no evidence to support that and haven't read anything similar. Anyone have any stories that might shed some light?
