it goes contained by and fits around your cervix.its shaped like a cup because it collects blood a bit than sucking up the blood teh way a tampon does.its a soft pliable things,not a hard plastic cup...smaller around than a tampon no/you squeeze the sides to bring it in and out.and its reusable.most women boil it within a bleach/water solution
