Which is better to use to detect a breast cyst.. ultrasound or mammogram?
Answers:
Girls, have you ever be punched in the lower belly?
A mammogram will detect some breast piles, but that is not ample information for the radiologist to determine what type of breast mass is present.
An u/s is good at determining what type of breast mass you enjoy. It can accurately diagnose cysts, fibroadenomas, lymph nodes etc. Some masses see on u/s will need a biopsy for diagnosis, however.
An u/s will NOT see microcalcifications, which can be an precipitate sign of breast cancer. Mammography can see these microcalcifications. This is why we do screening mammography on asymptomatic patients, and not screening u/s.
If you are a young woman and hold a breast mass that you can feel, most times, they will skip the mammogram. All signs of breast cancer appear white on x-ray picture, and dense breast tissue also appears white on film. Therefore, mammography does not do a great mission on imaging young breasts.
This is unnatural (about period-girls only)?
They both can detect it but an ultrasound can reveal whether or not it's cancerous.Vaginal discharge, but no intimate contact for years, should i worry?
your doctor will push for you as it is dependent on the type of insurance you have and the motive for the radiological evaluation. They use these different methods to assess the tissue best and later assess any abnomalities to get a better look w/ the ultrasound. The ultrasound give them a better close up of the cyst. It cannot tell them if it is cancerous or not but they can check the size of it and how it looks see if the edges are powerfully defined or not which can help assess if it is cancerous or not. The individual way to narrate if it is cancerous or not is biopsy. They use these other tools to decide if biopsy is needed by viewing it in multiple ways. Usually they do mammogram 1st and after do ultrasound to check any questionable areas from mammogram or physical exam
Mammograms do not detect breast cysts. They just show dense hoi polloi. If the radiologist suspects the mass may have fluid surrounded by it, then an ultrasound is perform. If there is fluid surrounded by the mass, a needle aspiration of the cyst may be suggested
