How normal is a irregular pap smear?

I stopped getting my periods on the pill for a year so I stopped taking it and it than took another five months to bring a period so, I wander of to the doc regarding that and also have a pap smear which was even due and immediately the doctor has call saying its deviant and advanced, is that common?
